The State of England

934:Many of the Wessex nobles have never been happy that a man raised in Mercia is their king. Others are angrier still because the claimant they favored,  Ælfweard, died rather too conveniently before he could be crowned.  Then, in the waning of last year, there was talk that Edwin Æðeling was plotting to seize the throne. True or not, the king had his brother placed on a boat without oar or sail and set adrift on the sea.  Word has it that the æðeling drowned himself rather than starve. Was Edwin indeed plotting to overthrow his brother?  Regardless of the truth, the dead æðeling's friends and ðegns have fled or gone into hiding. It is a time when loyalties are questioned, and to aid any such refugees will make enemies of the king's men.
Constantín mac Áeda has spurned the overlordship of Aðelstan, so this summer Aðelstan called forth many ðegns to ravage Alba.  Now the men of Ædingstowe return home, carrying spoils of victory. But what changes have come in their absence?
933:There are rumors of troubles. Constantín mac Áeda of Alba has spurned the overlordship of Aðelstan, and the Welsh princes watch to see what will happen.

Worse troubles are closer to home.  Many of the Wessex nobles have never been happy that a man raised in Mercia is their king. Others are angrier still because the claimant they favored,  Ælfweard, died rather too conveniently before he could be crowned.  Now, in the waning of the year, there is talk that Edwin Æðeling was plotting to seize the throne. True or not, the king had his brother placed on a boat without oar or sail and set adrift on the sea.  What has become of the æðeling is unknown, but barring rescue or God's grace his doom is upon him.  Now comes the question of who an usurper could claim support from?  His ðegns are likely suspects, but there are discontented hearts aplenty in this realm. It is a time when loyalties are questioned, and Aðelstan's men seek out his foes from among his friends.
